Welcome to SEABIA!

The Northern Southeast Alaska Building Industry Association (SEABIA) was created in October 1967 by a core group of local home builders as the Home Builders Association of Juneau.

Our purpose in forming an association was to organize Juneau builders for the purpose of mutual advantage and cooperation to the benefit of the industry as a whole; to educate the membership and general public about the standards of the industry; and to promote the building trades and industry in the northern half of Southeast Alaska, including the communities of Juneau, Haines, and Skagway.

Today, SEABIA is a 501©3 non-profit trade association chartered under the Alaska State Home Building Association (ASHBA) and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). We are one of six local HBA chapters throughout Alaska.

SEABIA Success Story: Enhancing Waste Disposal for Remodelers in Juneau

Issue:
Builders in Juneau faced increased costs and challenges disposing of construction debris from pre-2004 buildings due to a new Waste Management policy requiring testing for hazardous materials. Testing could cost $2,000-$3,000, complicating disposal for local contractors and homeowners.

Actions by SEABIA:
SEABIA President Victor met with Waste Management officials to address these issues after contractors were denied dump access for lacking certificates. Victor’s advocacy efforts led to a policy change, moving the material testing cutoff from 2004 to 1984.

Results Achieved:
This change resulted in:
-Lower waste disposal costs for remodelers.
-Improved access to disposal services.
-Positive feedback from local contractors.

What This Means for SEABIA Members:
The advocacy demonstrates the benefits of SEABIA membership, as reduced disposal costs enhance operational efficiency and can offset membership fees, showcasing the association’s commitment to addressing local industry challenges.
